EPISODE 236: THREE DAYS IN MALAYSIA - ANT EXPERT, RICE PADDIES & LEAVING LANGKAWI
After intensive boat maintenance in Langkawi, we share what else we did before heading to Thailand.
Our 13-year-old Darroch, an expert entomologist, gave a presentation about ants to fellow cruisers at Rebak Marina—worldschooling in action. We also visited a local rice paddy to learn traditional rice growing and harvesting, and practiced shredding coconut, connecting with Malaysian food culture hands-on.
Then we discovered we'd overstayed our visas. With major engine repairs keeping us at the marina longer than planned, we had to visit harbor master, immigration, customs, AND headquarters to explain. They listened to our story, didn't fine us, and gave us three days to leave.
Rebak Marina has been one of the best we've encountered in eight years—exceptional facilities (pool, gym, tennis, cheap bar) at prices that made Christmas luxury actually affordable. Saying goodbye was genuinely sad.
We depart early, navigating carefully through superyachts (including Flying Fox, possibly the world's most expensive charter yacht) and fishing nets. After fueling up at Telaga, we enjoy perfect sailing conditions to Ko Lipe, Thailand, where we celebrate with friends on the beach.
This episode captures the full cruising experience: cultural learning, bureaucratic challenges, practical preparations, and the satisfaction of finally setting sail after weeks of work.
