I’m not in Okinawa. I’m in “Typhoon Alley” on Amami Oshima—one of Japan’s longevity hotspots and, on and off for the past three years, my longevity laboratory.

A typhoon has just passed, and walking through the village afterward reminded me of something I keep encountering in places like this: what I call **the Art of Community**.

People watch out for each other. There is security in knowing others know you are there—without intrusion.

As a temporary resident, I try to remain visible. A nod on the road. A greeting as I walk through the village. People know I’m here. They see the lights come on at night.

There is care, but there is also space and privacy.

It’s one of the things I’m learning as I travel through Japan’s longevity hotspots: community doesn’t always need to be loud or dense to be present.
