Shizuoka Keeps Surprising Me #longevity #japan #healthylifestyle

I’m on Leg Two of my journey through Japan’s Top Ten and Bottom Three longevity prefectures, and Shizuoka keeps giving me reasons to stop.

One place stands out for women’s healthy longevity, another calls itself Japan’s healthiest city, another has remarkably low cancer mortality, and here in the mountains I’m exploring a town known for exceptionally long healthy, independent lives among men.

Shizuoka interests me because of its compressed Red Zone—the period between healthspan and lifespan that my research is increasingly focused on.

But longevity isn't the only reason to stop along the way. Japan also has a talent for creating things that are gloriously unnecessary, wonderfully imaginative and capable of making a 71-year-old grin.
