Best HURRICANE HOLE in SE United States, Brunswick GA (Ep.181) ⛵ The Foster Journey
We're at Brunswick Landing Marina. This hurricane hole sits anywhere from 8-15 miles inshore, depending on which way a storm is tracking.
While Georgia is known for some high wind thunderstorms, it sits recessed into the curvature of the continent. And most storms - we're talking real storms, hurricanes - do not take a path that result in direct hits.
That's right, if you look at the data from the last 50 years, there has not been a single direct hit from a hurricane. They either curve up the US east coast out toward Bermuda, slam into Florida, or come across land from the Gulf of Mexico.
Brunswick, Georgia, is more than a hurricane hole, it's a coastal gem brimming with breweries, a historic downtown, parks, a great library, and cafes. We admired the historic architecture and found our way to the Richland Rum distillery where we learned how they transform sugar cane to syrup to molasses and create varieties of aged rum.
