The Week That Changed Everything #JapanSolo #Longevity ##HealthyAging
Some weeks pass unnoticed. Others stay with you for a lifetime.
This week—just after the summer solstice—has come to mean many things to me.
It marks the beginning of a dream, the loss of that dream, the birth and loss of a son, and more recently, a gathering of family on a remote island in Japan to celebrate turning 70.
It is a week where grief and gratitude sit side by side.
Living now on the water, anchored off a small village, I’ve been reflecting on what it means not just to live longer—but to live well.
Because perhaps the real fear isn’t death… but the slow erosion of independence before it.
This is part of an ongoing series of field notes from Japan—exploring longevity, community, and what it means to remain fully alive.
Lowell Sheppard is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, author of ten books, and founder of the Never Too Late Academy.
Through Japan Solo, he documents lessons on longevity, community, and independent living, drawn from decades of slow travel and lived experience across Japan.
His forthcoming book, Longevity and the Art of Community: Lessons from Japan, explores how community—practiced over time—can support longer, healthier, and more independent lives..
