Murky water is bad enough when you know there could be something nearby. Finding out later just how curious the local sharks can be doesn’t help.

We’re at Sand Dollar Beach in Elizabeth Harbour, where murky water makes my anchor dive a little more uncomfortable than usual.

We snorkel what was once an amazing reef at Moriah Harbour Cay National Park and find clear signs that parts of it are dying off. There are still plenty of beautiful fish and turtles moving through the reef, along with a Great Barracuda hanging out at the far end.

The real surprise comes when a curious blacktip shark decides to check us out.

Cruising Elizabeth Harbour in the Exumas, with anchor diving, reef snorkeling, sea turtles, a Great Barracuda and a close blacktip shark encounter at Moriah Harbour Cay National Park.
