SDA261 Storm Fatigue
Four big squalls in three days meant a lot of time watching the radar, checking the anchor and getting up every time the weather arrived.
We’re anchored in the shallow waters of Pipe Creek, relying on the anchor we set recently and hoping lightning doesn’t repeat the strike that hit Dark Angel in the same area just over a year ago.
As the squalls build and move through, we explain what we’re seeing on radar, how the cells organize and travel, and what we do aboard Dark Angel when weather starts closing in.
I’m working hard to keep my nerves from getting in the way of doing my job as crew, while Dave methodically handles the engines along with the electronic and electrical systems.
Between squalls, we get a brief break and show the great barracuda that has taken up residence under the hull, along with a distant nurse shark and eagle ray.
Day and night don’t mean much when the weather keeps coming. If the squalls are there, so are we.
Monitoring squalls in Pipe Creek, reading storm cells on radar, preparing Dark Angel for severe weather, and managing anchor watch through day and night in the Exumas.
