A (Stressful) HAUL OUT After Sailing To Lagos | Ep. 40
We finally found a weather window to leave Porto and continue our trip to the South. There was little wind but we didn’t want to wait any longer. The waves were 2-3 meters at the moment, which was already more than enough for me. In a few days the wind would pick up but the waves would be higher too, so no thank you.
After spending the entire morning dodging fishing flags we decided to sail further away from the coast. The rest of the day was pretty boring; there was not much we could do because we were rocking on the waves.
We passed by Lisbon in the afternoon. We thought about stopping in this beautiful city but decided not to eventually. We didn't want to be stuck here for weeks because of the weather and we had to get to our appointment at the shipyard to get our sail drive repaired.
We tried our code 0 for the very first time and saw lots of dolphins on this trip.
We were welcomed to the South of Portugal with a beautiful sunrise. It was beautiful to sail along the southern coast of Portugal. We recognized a lot of the places we visited before with our camper. The sea was super smooth until we reached the bay of Lagos. We arrived in the Marina of Portimão around noon.
Turns out we would only be staying there for one night. We had planned to have the boat hauled out in Portimão to fix the sail drive. But we were now told to go to Lagos to have this done.
The trip to Lagos was amazing! The weather was great and the sea was calm. We got to enjoy our lunch on the front deck while admiring the coast of Portugal with its beautiful beaches and caves in between the rocks and cliffs.
By the time we arrived at the boatyard, the wind picked up a lot. It was a challenging situation to dock the boat in a narrow space, close to another boat and with wind gusts up to 20 knots. After a few tries and the help of almost all of the boatyard staff pulling ropes and shouting directions, we got her on the hydraulic lift. But just as she was out of the water, we heard a huge bang, saw smoke coming out of the trailer and oil was spraying everywhere. This was going to take a lot longer than we expected.
