Dodging storms sailing in the mythical Straits of Messina! Mooring under an active volcano! #52

In this episode we moor our home under an active volcano which actually erupts whilst we’re there!

Join us as we spend over a week waiting out some weather whilst moored beneath the mighty Mt Etna that dominates the Italian island of Sicily. Towering above us but blanketed in clouds we hear some explosions but don’t see that an eruption is taking place until we awake to find that ash has covered the nearby town - and any boats moored there!

Grateful we chose Riposto to stop in and are saved from the clean up operation we hire a car and head 1900m up the volcano and explore the old silvestri craters before finally being released by the weather to head up the Messina Straits, passing the swordfish boats it’s famous for, and on to Vulcano…the volcano after which all others are named where we drop the hook beneath the smoking giant!
