At sunset, I watched Wahine from the shoreline one last time. Later, following Japanese maritime custom, we burned the charms and sacred items marine shrines had given her over the years—honoring her former name and life while formally marking the start of a new chapter.

Wahine was my home and vessel of adventure. Now, as Wahine 8, she begins her transformation into a research and education vessel, preparing to cross the Pacific along the Turtle Highway from Japan to Mexico.

Goodbye, Wahine.
