A Scilly Decision? Is the dream over? | Questioning our choices - the realities of sailboat life #4
In this episode we finally realise a long held dream of sailing to the stunning Isles of Scilly situated just off the south coast of the U.K. but we are hit by bad weather and storms and things don't go as planned causing us to question our whole existence.
Having spent weeks watching and waiting for the right weather to sail to the islands we finally set sail excited and planning to spend a month or more in this stunning archipelago. Sadly though although we’d planned the weather to get there we hadn’t thought enough about how we’d deal with weather whilst there. With storms in the Atlantic regularly passing through 180 degrees as they pass over the islands, and no marinas, there is no one safe place to wait out a storm here.
We anchor in an anchorage protected from swell by a reef but where you can see the full force of Mother Nature and breaking waves just outside. Whilst protected from swell the anchorage is small and tidal and should the anchor drag there is no room or means of escape. We spent a night on anchor watch through some strong winds before moving to a mooring buoy but when the tide turned we were put across the swell and wind and endured another sleepless night.
When a storm was forecast to hit the islands in a few days we took the decision to leave and abandon our dreams of a long stay in this beautiful but rugged spot and set sail for the mainland questioning whether we could live a life constantly moving and hiding from weather.
As we made our way across the sea between the islands we were visited by a pod of Rissos dolphins. Initially we were unsure what they were but once we’d reassured ourselves they weren’t sharks or orca we enjoyed the unusual sight of these rare dolphins playing alongside the boat.
