SDA228 50 Hours on the Thorny Path | Calm Days, Lightning Nights

We picked our weather window for the 50-hour run from the Bahamas to the Dominican Republic along the Thorny Path.

The first day was exactly what we hoped for, calm seas and even a little sailing. But once the sun went down the lightning started building around us, and the nights became a whole different kind of passage.

In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we leave the Bahamas for the 50-hour passage to the Dominican Republic, beginning our run along the notorious Thorny Path.
The first day is calm and beautiful, but the nights bring lightning and building squalls that make for a long watch at sea.
Just before dawn we reach the coast of the Dominican Republic and wait offshore for daylight, then thread our way into Luperon, one of the safest hurricane holes in the Caribbean.

This is our first passage along the Thorny Path from the Bahamas to the Dominican Republic, a route famous among sailors for its headwinds, squalls, and challenging overnight passages.
