Nobody Mentioned the Cave of Bones | Three Weeks in Fulaga, Fiji
Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 349
Three weeks in Fulaga. We came here with plans to explore as much of the Lau group as possible. Fulaga had other ideas. And honestly — we stopped arguing with it a while ago.
This episode we move anchorage — not far, just somewhere new in the lagoon — and spend another extraordinary few days exploring this place. We hack our way through an overgrown jungle trail to visit our host family Mereh and John one last time, and leave with something we will treasure forever. A hand carved wooden piece made especially for us by John himself. Worth every spider web we walked through to get it.
Then things take an unexpected turn. A local invites us on a little tour. We follow him up into the hillside above the village and discover something that stopped us completely. The Cave of Bones. Ancient remains thought to be from the Tongan wars of the 19th century or the devastating measles epidemic of the 1870s. We didn't linger long. But we won't forget it.
The day ends the way the best days here always do. Back on the beach, sundowners in hand, VA sitting in the lagoon behind us, Fulaga doing what Fulaga does best.
